How It Works

Understanding Coax Broadband

How Coax Broadband Works

Cable broadband is delivered over coaxial cable using DOCSIS (Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification). A coax line runs from the provider's local node to your building, where a cable modem converts the signal into Ethernet. Because the coax infrastructure was originally designed for television, it allocates more spectrum to download channels than upload. Most business coax services today run on DOCSIS 3.1, supporting downloads up to 1 Gbps but limiting uploads to 35-50 Mbps.

Why Speeds Are Asymmetrical

Unlike dedicated fiber where bandwidth is symmetrical and exclusive, broadband coax connections share bandwidth across a neighborhood node. During peak hours, speeds may fluctuate. Upload speeds are particularly constrained because DOCSIS devotes fewer frequency channels to upstream traffic. For businesses that rely heavily on uploads (cloud backups, video conferencing, VoIP), consider our Dedicated Fiber or Business Fiber solutions for symmetrical speeds.

Key Benefits

No residential support queues
Bundle with voice and SD-WAN for savings
Provider-neutral: we source from Spectrum, Comcast, Cox, Optimum, and more

Business Broadband, Business Support

Consumer broadband providers treat business customers like an afterthought. Long hold times, residential support scripts, and no urgency around outages. Our managed broadband service wraps commercial internet circuits in business-grade support: proactive monitoring, dedicated account management, and escalation paths that get issues resolved quickly. You get broadband pricing with enterprise-level support.

Provider-Neutral Procurement

We work with every major broadband provider to find the best service available at your address. By comparing options from Spectrum, Comcast, Cox, Optimum, and other regional providers, we ensure you get the fastest available service at the most competitive price. If you move or need to add locations, we handle procurement across all your sites.

SD-WAN Enhanced

Pair broadband with our SD-WAN overlay for enterprise-grade performance at broadband pricing. SD-WAN intelligently routes traffic across multiple broadband links, providing automatic failover, QoS prioritization, and WAN optimization that transforms commodity internet into a high-performance business network. Two broadband connections with SD-WAN can outperform a single dedicated circuit at half the cost.

Broadband

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between broadband and dedicated fiber?

Broadband (cable/coax) is a shared connection where bandwidth is split among users on the same node. It offers asymmetrical speeds with fast downloads but limited uploads. Dedicated fiber provides a private, symmetrical connection exclusively for your business with guaranteed bandwidth and an SLA. Broadband is ideal for general business use, while dedicated fiber is best for mission-critical operations.

Why are upload speeds so much slower than download speeds on cable?

Cable broadband uses DOCSIS technology over coaxial cable, which was originally built for one-way television delivery. The frequency spectrum is divided unevenly, with most channels allocated to downloads. DOCSIS 3.1 supports up to 1 Gbps downloads but typically only 35-50 Mbps uploads. The newer DOCSIS 4.0 standard addresses this, but widespread deployment is still in progress.

Is broadband reliable enough for business use?

On its own, a single broadband connection may not meet enterprise reliability standards. But paired with SD-WAN and a secondary link (another broadband or 4G/5G), you achieve 99.99%+ uptime at a fraction of the cost of dedicated circuits. We recommend dual-broadband or broadband-plus-cellular configurations for any business-critical site.

Can you manage broadband from any provider?

Yes. Regardless of which ISP delivers the broadband circuit, we manage monitoring, support coordination, and troubleshooting on your behalf. We work with Spectrum, Comcast, Cox, Optimum, and dozens of other regional providers.

Which broadband provider is best for my business?

It depends on your location, speed requirements, and budget. Spectrum offers no-contract flexibility with speeds up to 1 Gbps. Comcast has the widest coverage with speeds up to 1.25 Gbps. Cox provides solid performance with optional fiber upgrades. Optimum is competitive in the Northeast. We compare all available options at your address and recommend the best fit.
